I chose this artifact for my e-portfolio because it was one of the very first assignments I had to complete for the adult education program. This course made me realize just how little I knew and began to understand just how far I had to go in my growth. I was required to go review the life events that I had gone through and how they had shaped me. It was interesting for me to realize that out of all the concepts I was learning about, sociocultural factors were what had the biggest influences on me.
This artifact relates to my theme in that it was the biggest illustration of growth I would have to do. It helped me to identify that truthfully, I had minimal experiences as an adult, I had not gone through many of major life changes like my classmates, or the adults I would be interacting with. I knew I needed to learn more and transform myself as an educator and as a person.
This artifact increased my learning in a few different ways. The biggest learning that took place was what I learned about myself. I never realized that even though legally I was an adult, I didn’t have much experience in being an adult, as well as how much society affected. It also greatly demonstrated the gap between myself and the adults I could potentially be working with. This artifact relates to my theory in critical education in that societal norms influenced me in a much bigger way that I realized. However, after making this discovery I feel that I could begin to see when this was happening and adjust if needed.
This is one artifact that I don’t think I would change. I gained a lot of valuable insight from this assignment that helped focus me throughout this program. I knew that I as learned new information I needed to examine how it could affect my life and how I could use it to grow, not just store new information to utilize at a later time. I also decided that I would have to draw parallels from situations that I was familiar with to how it could relate in the adult education field.
I have implemented the idea in this artifact by taking a closer look at myself, my education, and what influences those decisions. I have become more critical of what influences me. I question the source as well as the reasoning behind it. I feel that I’ve really started to become a better person, my own person. I still will try to please people, but not at the expense of myself. I continue to grow as a person and educator from reflecting on all of this.
