I chose this artifact for my e-portfolio because it was one of the first times that I saw adult education at work and began to identify the ideas and philosophies that I was learning about.
Up to this point, I had very limited experiences with adult education, and didn’t have any real world views of a lot of what I was reading about. I had to watch and re-watch the movie a few times to really pick up on what I was seeing as well as the potential factors behind them, but I was finally seeing what I was reading come alive in the movie. I was able to see how someone’s past can greatly influence their future. I was able to then watch this adult go through their trials and start to grow themselves.
While I know that this movie was all scripted, it still helped me to increase my knowledge of adult education. I was able to grow in my knowledge of how past experiences can shape an adult and their approach to learning and new experiences, and it helped to transform how I view adult education.
This artifact relates to my theory in behaviorism. A lot of Will’s education, both inside and outside of the classroom was shaped by positive and negative reinforcement. Unfortunately, Will had a lot of negative reinforcement in his life from authority figures that made him jaded towards adults, other individuals that weren’t in his friend group, and the educational system. However, after he met a professor that invested time in him and gave him positive reinforcement, Will began to change his view on life.
I would like to go back and watch “Good Will Hunting” again and see not only if I feel that the same ideas apply and why I feel that way, but also if I can pick out more themes or philosophies featured in the movie.
I have been able to implement what I’ve taken away from this artifact in a limited manner in my current role. I work with faculty teaching them how to use online educational tools, and I know that their past experiences with these tools can affect how they perceive the new tools. Because of this, I try relate new tools like Canvas to old tools they were used to like OnCourse.
