I chose to include a group photograph from my 3 day in person portion of my participation training course because I learned a lot about myself that weekend. It relates to my theme of growth and transformation because before this time, while I viewed myself as a leader, I always thought that I was a passive type of leader. I would take charge when appointed or the role was expected, but otherwise I was content to sit back and let someone else take the lead. I was pleasantly surprised to find that when there was a need for leadership, I confidently volunteered without hesitation.
This artifact increased my learning in that it gave me the confidence that I am able to be a leader, regardless of the age of learners I am working with. A reservation I have had since I started the Adult Education program was the potential to be younger than my learners. There were many adults in my group that weekend that were older than me, and yet I was able to put myself in a leadership role and be respected as such. This artifact relates to my behaviorist theory of education because I received positive feedback every time I acted as a leader, which encouraged me to continue taking that role and developing myself as a self-appointed leader.
I wouldn’t make any changes to this artifact as it helped open my mind to the idea that not only can I step up and be a leader, but that it doesn’t make a difference as to the age group of individuals that I am interacting with at the time. I have slowly started to integrate this in meetings, and am looking forward to see how this changes my tone and the environment when I hold my next Canvas training with faculty.
